Bio

A bio page seems like such an – ego stroking – thing to have. Also a horrifically bad idea if you have things you’d rather future employers didn’t hear about, but when you’ve invested as much time in the Internet as I have it really makes no difference as most of everything of note that I’ve done has been on the Internet.

That said, it seems like a better name for a page than “about”, considering I have a brief synposis of who I am on the right column of every page. This one will be a bit rambly.

Speaking of which, that photo was taken by Charlie Von Metzradt at the 2008 Golden Spiders, and I’m told it’s the best photo of me there is. My lovely girlfriend Sarah, however, claims it’s one of the worst photos of her, so I must apologise to her.

In case the domain name hadn’t made it apparent, I’m Ross Duggan. I’ve been born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Western Europe, Really far to the east of America, Next To England, can’t miss it, really. As of the time of writing I’m twenty-three years old, old enough to be considered an old person by children but young enough to still be asked for ID by suspicious bouncers.

For a long time now I’ve also been known by the Internet handle I chose when I was fifteen, CuLT. The capitalization was important to me at the time, and is probably relatively recognizable at this stage so I haven’t bothered changing it.

I have been maintaining a blog of sorts since 2005, this is the most recent one, and I hope this will be the permanent one.

The two previous incarnations I have are here, at my Redbrick account, and here, at Blogspot. I’m loath to import or delete content, hence why those blogs stay there :)

Work

I’m lead developer at Boards.ie, lead because I’m the only developer, really, but it needs to be said so that nobody gets any ideas about installing things they’re not supposed to (looking at you, Cloud).

Stuff I’ve done / I do

I’ve sort of abandoned my post at this stage, but way back in 2005 I started the country’s first “anime convention” with my college friend John Doyle and called it EirtaKon. A side effect of the convention was creating the country’s first anime club to host it, DCU’s Anime & Manga Society. Right now, EirtaKon is being run by a fantastic group of people who helped make the last convention a spectacular success with over 700 attendees. For a super tiny niche that used to be entirely the remit of Sci-Fi conventions, it’s something I’m proud to have had a hand in.

I also run Eirtaku, which is effectively the central hub for anime communities in Ireland, and is something I took over administration of in 2004 when it had ~20 members, after the previous caretaker left Ireland to live and work in Japan.

Wthax.org is a site I began in 2005 to host some images for the community of the Digital Art & Design forum on Boards.ie. Used to run a script called “mihalism” that I hacked a little bit, but dumped in 2007. Unfortunately the replacement was in early development, but had to be implemented when I accidentally deleted the source tree of the old version.
The next iteration is in planning stage and will be written using the CodeIgniter framework.
